I am typically not one to rave about on camera hotshoe flashes, I have a couple of Godox TT 685s anothe Godox that I got like eight years ago I don’t even know the model number of… and a Godox AD200.The V100 is more akin to the AD200 in terms of functionality than it is to the 685s, it has more features and functions than the AD200. But with the ability to use it on and off camera seamlessly is a breeze if you have any Godox triggers, the usual stuff that makes me love Godox is baked in.But I will say I was initially highly put off by the price tag, For that kind of scratch I was expecting AD200 style quality… and I was not disappointed, because while the power output is 100 watts for most shooting I do with the AD200 it’s not 1/1 or full power. So this V100 more than keeps up where I need it, the new battery design is delightful and far more powerful. It’s sturdier than my TT 685s, and the round head is yes, better than the rectangles I’m used to.So after using it a few times I can absolutely say it’s worth the price.The only things I can even nitpick is the touchscreen, which is super bright and adjustable doesn’t invite you to build a muscle memory of just hitting your buttons and going on your way, this will absolutely slow you down if you’re just “used to the way things work”, but that’s not to say it’s slower by any stretch, it just forces you to relearn how to do something you probably already know how to do, so prepare to be impressed and a bit put off when it doesn’t feel like it did.I had this same frustration moving to the X3c from the X2Tc, but that just also lends to maybe me being almost 50 years old and relearning things doesn’t click as fast as it used to, now I don’t even use my X2Tc because the X3c is just sleeker and easier to use. Same functionality for both but after getting it down the older just feels clunky.I will say that my photographer friend that came from a V1 to the V100 said it was only slightly better and ended up being meh, but they wholly understand my excitement moving from the TT685 to the V100.I all around adore this, I had hummed and hawed about getting the AD100 and I feel this is for me a better fit, because if I need on camera flash this is a powerhouse, but if I need a second light this will replace using my other two 685s in terms of power and quality of life with its screen readability from across the room.Hands down the best hot shoe flash I’ve owned and far exceeded every expectation I had for Godox equipment, which is saying a lot because I have choose them over bigger brand names for price/features for over five years now!
